FMI: fire activity for Europe and the globe during 2018

During the fire season 2018, the fire danger remained very high for almost three months in Finland. There was about 1400 more forest fires than in a typical summer. The exceptionally dry conditions and high fire danger emphasized the importance of the fluent exchange of information between FMI and Rescue Services.

Eastern Attika

In Eastern Attika study area, a fire started in the early afternoon of Monday 23^rd of July, on Penteli Mt., northeast of Athens and 5 km to the west of the Eastern Attica coastline, evolving to one of the most catastrophic Wildland-Urban Interface fires, with about 100 casualties and significant structure damages. The cause of the wildfire remains officially unknown. The fire propagated very fast to the east in an unexpected manner, due to the strong west and dry wind, which is very rare in the area, destroying a major part of the settlements of Neos Voutzas and Mati, where finally stopped at the coast three hours of burning. The fire service responded by sending 60 persons on 24 vehicles, 15 vehicles belonging to registered volunteers, 2 ground forces teams, as well as 3 Canadair aircrafts and a helicopter. Organized evacuation operations took place at a church charity institution (Lyreion) and all children summer camps of the wider area, but no evacuation actions were taken by the authorities for the most affected areas of Mati and Voutzas.

Chania Crete

Four important fire events occurred in Chania study area, during the fire season 2018. The most important one started on Monday, 23rd of July in Metochi location and burned about 200 ha of forest and rural area. Strong winds were stoking the blaze making it difficult for firefighting crews to contain the flames.

KNMI: Fire incidents in the Netherlands

Recent wild fire incidents include 7 August 2018 (Wateren, 75 ha), 16 July 2018 (Maarheeze, 16 ha), 15 July 2018 (‘t Harde), 20 July 2018 (Elspeet, 5 ha), 23 June 2018 (various locations a.o. Terschelling, Maria Peel)
